Why Nigeria Might Be on the Next Trump Travel Ban List

Trump ban Nigeria

It is now confirmed that Trump will announce a new travel ban list next Monday. There are many thoughts on how the new Trump ban will affect ties between the US and the countries affected, which might include Nigeria. The ban will probably only restrict Nigerians from participating in certain visa categories.

White House spokesman, Hogan Gidley, mentioned that countries that want to participate in U.S. immigration programs should be able to comply with all security and counter-terrorism measures. He further added, “We do not want to import terrorism or any other national security threat into the United States.” The failure of the Nigerian government to fight terrorism is, therefore, one of the most likely reasons for Nigeria being added to the list.

Furthermore, according to the Wall Street Journal, certain countries have citizens with greater tendencies to overstay US visas, and this is also a factor that the Trump administration follows. Nigerian citizens have a history of visa overstay while visiting the US, so this could add further pressure to include Nigeria on the Trump travel ban list.
