Private sponsor or referrals – what that means for a Nigerian intending to apply for Canadian immigration

The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria released a note to clarify questions on its refugee and immigration processes for a Nigerian.

It said those intending to immigrate to Canadian must go through the right process as it does not accept refugee applications directly from people.

The statement from the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, clearly states that: “Canadian Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates, Consulates-General or Honorary Consulates do not accept refugee applications directly from people”. The message is from the government of Canada the statement says.

How a Nigerian can get Canadian immigration documents

Canada is witnessing a soaring interest in its immigration programmes, especially from Nigerians. After absorbing one of the activists, DJ Switch, who fronted the End SARS protest, more people are hoping to get away from the aftermaths.

Getting a document to resettle in Canada requires going through an approved agency and private sponsors. The statement says the United Nations Refugee Agency is one of those and it also has designated referral organizations.

If an applicant is not referred to the Canadian Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates, Consulates-General or Honorary Consulates by an organisation that is approved by the government or a Canadian citizen, it will not be accepted. More so, there is no grantee it will grant the application.

“You cannot apply directly for resettlement”. Approval of immigration applications are also in the controls of Canadian migration officers, the statement noted.

By 2023, the Canadian government hopes to absorb 1.2 million immigrants.
