NCC says forceful subscription to VAS by telcos should be reported

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC has called out Nigeria to report forceful subscription into Value Added Services, (VAS) by mobile data operators.

The Director of Consumer Affairs, NCC, Efosa Idehen in an announcement said that the commission has directions on the aforementioned.

Consumers should check out what a VAS is about before accepting prompts. If they don’t accept these prompts and yet a subscription becomes active, they should report the telco. The action he said, “is punishable by sanction”.

“There are penalties for forcefully subscribing subscribers into a VAS”.

Nigeria’s telecommunication sector in 2020 GDP

The telecommunications sector played a role in getting Nigeria out of recession the 2020 Q4 GDP figures show.

The NCC is therefore iterating its regulatory measures that protect consumers from the adverse impact on the quality services from telcos.

The sector contributed 12.45% to Nigeria’s GDP in the Q4 of 2020.

This was duly highlighted in a statement by Director of Public Affairs, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

He also noted that over 85.9 million Nigerians now have 3G and 4G networks access and at least 204.6 million have active voice subscriptions according to latest data.

Apparently, the pandemic forced more people, the government and businesses to rely heavily on telecoms services.
