ASUU Strike Update and Meeting with FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), says has not gotten a signal from that Federal Government prior to the anticipated indoor negotiation this week. Hence, there is no date for a meeting with the FG any time soon.

According to a statement from ASUU, some of its members have died and others are going to seek “alternative means of survival”.

ASUU Update

Parts of the statement from ASUU reads: “Today, we wish to let Nigerians especially our students and parents know that there is no hope in sight to ending or suspending the ASUU strike that has lingered for several months as Government is yet to show serious commitment towards addressing our core demands”.

The statement also reiterates that the reduction in the subvention and modulated payment of salaries of its members in the last 15-months had grossly affected the running of academic activities in the university.

The ASUU strike which has lasted for months in Nigeria is based on a disagreement between the government and ASUU.

They are unable to reach an agreement on the payment system for ASUU members who are insisting on having using the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, UTAS.

The FG had requested that ASUU submit the UTAS for integrity test. However, last week, the FG insisted that the UTAS will hold only if ASUU members register on the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS first. The union is refusing to accept this order.

The Federal Government is also exploring new options if ASUU will not end the strike and it is looking into the labour law.
