The government in Nigeria could ban unaccredited foreign universities and the use of rouge certificates.
A signed document from the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria reveals that the government will no longer allow uncredited or illegitimate certificates from foreign universities in the country.
This is part of the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to ensure that Nigerians obtain competitive foreign degrees.
The press release from the Minister of Education on evaluating foreign universities in Nigeria
The statement from the ministry says that “with the inauguration of the 34th National Standing Committee (NSC) on the evaluation of foreign qualification, it is now clear that the federal government will no longer tolerate the operations of illegal campuses and affiliations with foreign unaccredited universities, implying that the days of ‘Boys Quater’ degree are over and for good”.
“The minister, Adamu Adamu said it is in line with the present administration’s quest for ensuring that Nigerian students obtain foreign qualifications that are internationally competitive and of academic and moral excellence”.

Dealing with the broad principle of evaluation, fine-tune and improve the established criteria for the of foreign qualifications.
Decide the Nigerian equivalent of foreign educational qualifications.

To serve as an appellate body to appraise representations from aggrieved individuals on emerging routine evaluation issues.
Carry out other assignments relevant to this mandate.

Portal set up by the Minister of Education
The ministry has set up a portal for Nigerian students who want to find out about the evaluation process. The Standing Committee will also respond to questions of the process of evaluation on www.ess.education.gov.ng. More so, anyone with a question on equivalent certificates and degrees of foreign institutions can visit the site.
Hopefully, compliance with the ministry’s effort to ban foreign unaccredited universities in Nigeria will reduce illegitimate certificates. This was a note by the Director, Education Support Service in the Ministry, Lydia Giginna in the statement.
