The World Trade Organization, WTO, will likely secure two new records in November 2020. This is leaning on its final decision for the director-general position from the two final candidates – Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s candidate and Yoo Myung-hee, South Korea’s.

Okonjo-Iweala, getting the director-general position is the pivotal element of the WTO’s representation of Africa. Otherwise, the WTO gets to keep only one new record – having the first female director-general since inception.

Projected by one point, COVID-19, the skills, manifestos and extensive understanding of the WTO trajectories, for each of the candidates is of great importance to the group and its members.

WTO New Director-General

Global trade pursuits have taken a lasting mark from the pandemic. The WTO is expecting a poor rebound in 2021 from a drop of 9.2% this year.

Aside from that, the trade war between the worlds two biggest commercial powers the U.S and China, have saddled the WTO. Washington isn’t letting the WTO perform its responsibility in settling disputes. It also refuses to let it appoint judges on its disputes appeals panel. This is crippling the organisation’s ability to safeguard global trade.

With that in mind, a critical action faces one of the two final choices of the WTO director-general candidates. Showing keenness is meagre, but drawing on aristocrat skills to connect all members will be twice as valuable.

The words of Nigeria’s candidate Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala which describe trade as “a mission and a passion” stirs the WTO given the tension and challenges in 2020.

Okonjo’s foreign trade expertise clearly guides her vision for the WTO. Both the EU and the U.S have shown their solidarity to the one time World Bank development economist.

The former finance and former foreign minister in Nigeria, Okonjo currently chairs the board of the international vaccines alliance, Gavi.

The WTO will decide who becomes the director-general early in November after its consultation process ends.
