The Lunar New Year season which is supposed to be celebrated Saturday 25 in China has to a large extent been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Without a vaccine for the coronavirus yet, the number of infected people has only increased with the US recording its second case today.
Though Thailand has now recorded the fifth case, all neighbouring countries to China are now taking more profound precautions. North Korea is putting a temporary ban on incoming travellers.
In Europe, the airports are handing flyers out to enlighten travellers on what to do if they notice any symptoms.
In Africa, Nigeria took the lead with initiating airport screening and disinfecting processes. The NCDC (Nigeria Center for Disease Control) is also asking for travellers from Wuhan to notify them if they feel unwell.
No Treatment Available Yet
The World Health Organisation has ruled that coronavirus is not a global health emergency. However, at this stage, even with the low risk of the coronavirus in Nigeria, it is already been taken seriously.
The 2002-2003 SARS outbreak was similar to this in more ways than one including originating from China. A vaccine was immediately developed for SARS but was not needed in the end.
Health officials in the US are urging people all over the world to take the same precautions as they would for the common cold. They also warn that a vaccine for the coronavirus might take at least three months to develop.
