The rogue Nigeria police unit SARS which is now disbanded did more damage than it solved problems in Nigeria. But the End of Sars became a reality when the country’s youths decided to take to the street to protest the exploits, false charges, killings and it made the news fast.

It’s over a week now and gridlocks thrive in big cities like Lagos. Miscreants are also bothering peaceful protesters according to some news sources, however, the youths are resilient.

End SARS News

Nigerians are taking out their anger on SARS, but it seems more like what they are saying with End SARS protest, is reform Nigeria completely. The Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu announced the disbandment of the unit with immediate effect.

Protesters are requesting the resignation of the IG backing their requests with incredulity for his words. It is not the first time that IG has agreed to reform the unit and did nothing.

Nigerians fear that the SARS unit disbandment is only in words. They want an official decree from the president ending the SARS.

They also request that the legislature gets involved while asking for compensation for families of victims.

More so, they are requesting the government to set up a legal panel of inquiry which will investigate officers who violate human rights. In supplication, SARS officers should not be deployed to another police unit to avoid more their impunity. Instead, the officers should take drug tests and undergo mental exams.

The president must also give them a timeline for all promises he makes on the End SARS subjects. Is professionalism of the police too much – they ask? Protesters are holding their grounds until their requests are met.

End SARS News – Who is Aisha Yesufu

The End SARS protest has produced an iconic photo in Nigeria bearing the face of Aisha Yesufu in it. This photo that appears to speaks a thousand words is being named the Statue of Liberty in Nigeria.

Aisha Yesufu, social and political activists, who speaks up against insecurities and inhumanity was one of the lead activists on the Chibok girls campaning ‘Bring Back our Girls’ in 2014.

Having grown up in Northern Nigeria where girls are given away to marriage at age 14, Aisha had a difficult childhood. Most of her friends according to her, got married at that age just when she was trying to acquire an education and become the businesswoman and activist that she is today.

Aisha Yesufu faced armed police officers with one fist in the air in the iconic End SARS photoand we are yet to find the protographer who took the iconic photo.

What is Swat

The IG announced the formation f a new unit Switching to Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. He said that no member of the disbanded SARS unit will be deployed in the SWAT unit.

Switching to SWAT Team feels more like reforming a name rather than a unit to Nigerians. Does a change of name also change its will their mode of operation? Will they take the youths more seriously and stop harassing them?
