CBN requires other financial institutions to set up cyber threat intelligence, CTI programme

CTI Programme for other financial institutions

CBN directs other financial institutions to set up a CTI programme.

In its recent risk-based cybersecurity framework and guidelines for other financial institutions, OFIs, the CBN stated that there is need for objective knowledge of all emerging threats, cyber-attacks and more.

This, therefore, necessitates the establishment of cyber threat intelligence programmes to allow for effective information distribution and threat review within the OFI.

According to the CBN, the CTI programme shall “proactively identity, detect and mitigate potential cyber-threats and risks.”

Why CBN CTI programme directive for other financial institutions, OFIs?

It might be impossible to fight cyber-attacks efficiently if OFIs lack an understanding of security red flags, threat warnings and methods.

Cyber threat intelligence, CTI is possessing knowledge of impending threats, as well as the impact of these attacks that OFIs must possess.

More importantly, it is knowing the motive of such attacks and ways to stop them. CTI enables OFIs to prevent cyber-attacks by examining the threat data and information they collect from attackers.

These data provides them with the intelligence they need to identify and protect sensitive information useful in making organisational decisions.

What is a Cyber Threat Intelligence Program?

Threat intelligence analysis requires the use of tools and techniques to collect useful information about threats targeting an OFI.

Threats could exist in several categories and the programme allows for blending and differentiation.

Cyber Threat Intelligence programme delivers these raw data on threats in a single characterisation and evaluation of cyber threat incidents.

More so, the CTI programme is a scheme for identifying trends in cyber threats activities.
