DisCos are now distributing free meters to customers

The Managing Director, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ernest Mupwaya, confirmed on Tuesday that DisCos received fund from the Federal Government to distribute free meters program.

The amount which according to news sources is estimated at about N23bn is solely for the purpose of mass metering in Nigeria. It will be sufficient to provide meters and replace dysfunctional units to customers, AEDC MD said.

The AEDC has previously completed on metering initiatives. However, with all put together, it is still less than the total of 900,000 meters it will distribute in the free mass metering program.

The fund is already released to power distribution companies who sat with the Central Bank of Nigeria on Tuesday. They will deploy about six million free electricity meters to connection points on terminals for power consumers throughout Nigeria.

Over 30 million consumers nationwide will benefit from the free metering program.

By December 2021, at least 100,000 meters will go out in the first batch launching in Lagos, Kano and Kaduna Distribution Companies (DisCos) divisions at a cost of N6bn. Installation of the remaining free meters in other states will begin in about a year and six months later from the first batch.

According to AEDC MD, it is free and without charges as it hopes to eliminate approximate billing.

More so, this will reduce losses for DisCos and increase metering measures in Nigeria. The economic status of Nigeria could also absorb some benefit from the job creation component of the mass metering.
