The International Olympic Committee (IOC) just reached a decision to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for one year. Now is has been moved to 2021 due to the inability to contain the coronavirus outbreak yet.

An IOC spokesperson made it known on Tuesday that the IOC, the executive board, the Japanese government, the Tokyo 2020 organising committee have had several discussions concerning the postponement of the Games.

The Olympics is a credible competition and athletes usually have to train hard before the event. Many countries are on strick lockdown with athletes who are unable to train. They are withdrawing from the Games and this put some pressure on the IOC to reach a decision on postponement fast.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan made it known that the IOC president Thomas Bach is in 100% agreement with his proposal to postpone for one year according to BBC. International Olympic Committee (IOC) also confirms that the Games will take place no later than 2021.

The year 2020 hasn’t been easy with coronavirus is now registered in nearly every country and over 375,000 cases.

The Olympics was scheduled to begin on 24 July. It is the first time that it will see such a delay in history. The name is also going to remain Olympics 2020 rather than Olympics 2021.

Many people are also looking forward to a decision on the postponement of the Paralympic Games.
