Nigeria at 60 - President Buhari Independence Day 2020 Speech

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari this morning gave his independence day speech to open the 2020 celebration as the country turns 60. The president wraps his entire statement in togetherness, the biggest recipe for the theme of the 2020 Independence Day – “Together shall we be”.

He said in his speech that Nigeria can achieve whatever it desires if it pursues aspirations together. Furthermore, he noted that reflection is part of what he does on a daily basis. He, therefore, feels the need for collective reflection

Since Nigeria is for all of us and does not belong to any ruling party or opposition party or even the president, Nigerians must play their parts to achieve what they want, he said.

“We must focus together on ways of resolving the identified critical challenges that underline our present state”.

According to President Buhari, achieving that would involve:

Evolving and sustaining our democratic culture that leaves power in the hands of the people.
Supporting the enthronement of the rule of law, demanding accountability of elected representatives and contributing to good governance.
Increasing our commitment to peaceful co-existence in a peaceful secure and united Nigeria.
Harnessing and optimizing our tremendous human and natural resources to attain our goal of being in the top 20 economies of the world.
In the process, lifting hundred million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.
Strengthen the institutions to make them stronger in protecting national interests.
Imbibing tolerance in diversity.

He ends the list by saying he is a firm believer in transparent free fair and credible elections. “This has been demonstrated during my term as a democratically elected president”, he said.

In other to nudge the country in the right direction, President Buhari talks the reception of sovereignty by Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, founding fathers, civil war and reconciliation.
