NIN enrolment for foreign diplomats and legal residents in Nigeria begins

National identity registration, NIN, for foreign diplomats in Nigeria commences January 19, 2021, at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A special enrollment centre is currently being put in place to handle the needs of foreign diplomats under the management of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and through the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC.

The federal government has said that registration is mandatory for foreign diplomats in Nigeria as it is for citizens. Members of the Diplomatic Corps will get further support for enrollment from the centre.

According to the statement by the ministry of communications, “The National Identity Number is mandatory for diplomats who will reside in Nigeria for a continuous period of two years or more”.

All lawful residents in Nigeria also fall under this mandate to get a NIN as Section 16 of the National Identity Management Commission Act 2007 states.

The FG set the order for NIN registration in Nigeria in December 2020. Furthermore, it demanded telecommunications companies to block all SIM cards that do not have a valid NIN on their networks.

Integration with SIM ends on January 19, 2021 for mobile phone users who are already have a NIN.

Otherwise, all subscribers have until February 9, 2021 to get a NIN and integrate with their phone numbers.
