Without a cure or preventive medicine for COVID-19, traditional healers in Nigeria are taking responsibility and re-concocting herbs formula. Many are claiming to have herbal remedies for COVID-19 and NAFDAC released a statement warning Nigerians about them.
In disapproval of the remedies circulating the internet space in Nigeria, NAFDAC warning says that any claim of a COVID-19 cure “must be subjected to clinical evaluation.”
NAFDAC did, however, encourages stakeholders to bring forward products of their research findings. The remedies will be taken for the “internationally recognized process of approval through pre-clinical and where applicable, clinical trials”.

Researchers and practitioners of traditional medicine are expressing an interest in COVID-19 related medicines. They are “being guided to submit such medicines to NAFDAC for expedited review” the statement reports.
Furthermore, NAFDAC said that African rich herbs field have as many medicinal plants as it does poisonous ones. Though herbs are applied in modern medicine by pharmaceutical companies, they are also properly scrutinized.
NAFDAC is therefore mandated to safeguard the health of Nigerians citizens. For this reason, they are making sure that COVID-19 remedies and all medicine approved in Nigeria will have established safety data.
