Before now, transportation had been low key at the Onitsha River port utilized by a few companies like Julius Berger for equipment. But expectations are better for people who want to utilize the Onitsha port for business.
Onitsha is a trade city in Nigeria that has waited 42 years to get cheaper options to clear goods.
Rather than a trip to Lagos, the now operational port is giving Onitsha traders the option to clear their goods at home. The value-added aspect of the Onitsha port is that consumers would also get these goods at cheaper rates.
Having equipped the Onitsha port with facilities that would enable easy transportation and movement of cargoes, the poor authority is set for international trade.

Since its commission in 2012, the Onitsha water route has had the competence to process shipments and trades. River Niger was also dredged in 2009 to encourage water sweeping, depth in its waterways and safe transport.
However, the new flag off shows that barges can operate the Onne/Onitsha port the route.
Onitsha River Port
In October, barges began to arrive at the Onitsha port from Onne, Rivers State and Lagos with authorisation from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
Global shipping giant, Maersk began operations at the Onitsha Inland Port in October with China-Onne port and to Onitsha clarion terminal routes.
More so, China imports routes are becoming prevalent to traders in Nigeria according to recent NBS report from the first nine months of 2020.
Hence, the route is offering more opportunities for eastern Nigeria who are big dealers of imports from China. Autos, car parts and all manners of fairly used wears could have lower price tags for the masses of consumers.
Transportation of consumer goods is easier without traffic. But it tends to cut prices for end-users and increase profit for the trader.
