Why Was Muhammad Sanusi II Emir of Kano Dethroned?

Sanusi

People are viewing the dethronement of Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano differently, and considering that his grandfather was also dethroned. However, it is more reasonable to think that before he was dethroned, he has long lost his hold on his heritage as the Emir of Kano.

Since his embroilment with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, one can only imagine the aggression that will follow after the reelection. But no one thought Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano will be dethroned.

Shortly after the re-election, Ganduje moved to pass a memorable bill. The bill will reforms state traditional institutions and moved on the Kano’s Emirs appointment and deposition act. The Emir topped the governor’s list for several reasons including challenging the governor’s intent to pass the new bill.

Before his dethronement, the split left Muhammadu Sanusi II presiding over the densely populated, small area. The intent was to suppress his influence.

Having existed for all these decades, Ganduje made a move that is considered a historic one on the Emirate of Kano when he split it into five. To the people of Kano, who take pride in the Emirate, it is slight. They have managed to keep going strong since the first attempt at splitting it in the 1980s.

Sanusi is active in criticising political issues and makes direct comments that government officials consider offensive. His position as the Emir earned him power that most people who wish to speak up don’t have.

Events from the last years which contributed to Sanusi’s dethronement have since begun building up. According to news reports in 2017, the Emir allegedly did not cooperate with an investigation initiated to look into the finances of the emirate the same year. He was said to have given instructions to emirate officials to dodge questions which led to his suspension.

Among the allegations levelled against Sanusi as the Emir of Kano Kano today are misappropriation and insubordination, refusal to abide by the constitution. Ado Bayero is the successor of the Emir of Kano Emirate.
