Uber, Bolt drivers in Nigeria have received poor treatment from their employers over the years.

Several Uber and Bolt drivers in Lagos have teamed up alongside their coordinating body Professional E-hailing Drivers and Private Owners Association (PEDPA) to seek an upgrade from the ride-hailing companies.

According to the National President of PEDPA, Mr Idris Shonuga the ride-hailing companies are aware of their complaints as the body has written several letters to them about it.

Shonuga also said that the companies are refusing to attend to the letters to upgrade drivers’ welfare in Nigeria. Uber and Bolt drivers in Nigeria have announced a strike that takes effect today, Monday, April 19, 2021.

Uber and Bolt drivers’ said that they make close to nothing from 15 long hours of daily service. They have a fixed rate of N10 per minute set by the PDPA and makes grossly N15,000 daily.

When all expenses are taken away, the Uber and Bolt drivers are left with about N1,500 (1%) of the amount they made earlier.

Uber and Bolt drivers’ demands

Idris Shonuga also reported that several drivers from both Uber who has over 50, 000 drivers and Bolt have lost their lives while on duty.

PEDPA is therefore calling for an immediate review of e-taxi charges while considering the current economic situation in Nigeria.

More so, it is asking for a satisfactory welfare package for drivers and compensation to the families of those that lost their lives. Some Uber and Bolt drivers’ who also suffered a permanent disability while on duty also require compensation.

Uber and Bolt drivers’ are also not allowed by their respective companies to form unions. This practice is grossly feared in the United States where Uber is headquartered.
