Philipines Quail Farm Fight Bird Flu Outbreak Amidst Coronavirus

While the Philipines remain in a state of emergency, the island of Luzon under quarantine and the COVID-19 crises rising, a bird flu outbreak has been detected in a quail farm in the country. The bird flu a strain of the influenza A virus and otherwise known as H5N6. It affects poultry products and fowl livestock.

The Philippines Department of Agriculture confirmed this Monday 16 saying that 30 quails tested positive for the H5N6 Avian flu. 12 000 affected quails have also been buried to prevent further spread. They also assured the public that the government is prepared to handle it.

William Dar, Agriculture Secretary commented on this saying that quarantine and surveillance are ongoing. This will ensure that the disease has not made it far beyond 1km and 7km radius.

In 2017, the same strain of the bird flu virus had hit some local poultry farms. This time, it was detected in Jaen municipality in Nueva Ecija quail farm and so far it is the only affected farm.
