According to the NBS report, most migrants travel without documents.
The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS has provided a rare insight on migration-related topics in Nigeria with a report from a 2020 survey.
The report highlights the level of awareness and perceptions of migrants, as well as the dangers of irregular migration, is a collaboration between the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
This pioneering initiative in Nigeria eliminates assumptions on the appeals to migrate and tries to piece together the affinity.
The base of the survey comprises data collected from four states – Delta, Edo, Imo and Lagos – with a 93.6% response from 2,740 households.
The search for greener pastures was the major interest both for intending migrants and returnees. The distribution in percentage was nearly even for both men and women who wanted to travel for the said reason “greener pastures”.

Migrants who travel by desert and sea face considerable travel risks under dehumanising conditions. More so, at least 70% of the returnees for both genders had no visas and passports.
Despite these, a large percentage of males respondents during the survey in Lagos and Edo indicated the intention to travel through the desert.
There is a strong preference for North America, South America and Australia as well as Europe.

According to Yemi Kale, statistician-general of the federation who gave an address at the presentation of the report, “data to inform and guide policy decision making in this area has been lacking – up till now.”
“The availability of data represents a fundamental and necessary ingredient if the challenge is to be addressed holistically.”
More so, when statistics are right, then there would be provisions and policies to respond to the real migration needs in Nigeria.
The report, therefore, “establishes a baseline upon which informed policies can be designed and targeted to address the challenge of illegal, unregulated immigration as it affects Nigeria,” he concludes.
