The Independence Day celebration in Nigeria 2020 – This day indicates the end of colonial rule and the day the leaders received sovereignty.
The citizens did a lot to mark it in 1960 and there is still a lot they do today. There is a concern that the coronavirus pandemic will limit the activities for Independence Day 2020.
But it is deserving to go through some of the special functions used to mark October 1 in Nigeria. This year, it is the 60th (Diamond anniversary) Independence Day celebration in Nigeria.
The government on Tuesday, September 30, 2020, declared October 1 a public holiday as the head of states does every year. Parents and children get to stay at home – but this year it is different in a lot of ways as many school kids are still at home due to lockdown form the coronavirus pandemic.
Nigeria Independence Day 2020 – Theme, Logo, Activities
The theme for Nigeria’s Diamond Anniversary and 60th Independence Day celebration is “Together shall we be”. The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari in his speech during the logo unveiling ceremony said the logo appropriately defines the theme and that the theme is to keep Nigerians united.
Activities that take place on October 1 will probably not happen this year. However, here is a list of those things that happen in the country on this day.
The Military Parades – The struggles, fight and freedom of the country is celebrated in a marching parade by the military. It often holds in a stadium with the president or a representative in attendance.
School Parades – Schools recently resumed after the lockdown and there could be parades for this year like every other year. Students go state stadiums where the governor of the state or a representative receives a salute from them during a marching parade.
Tribal cultural dances – Being a nation of at least 200 known tribes, it became needful to showcase everyone’s culture as a sign of peace and equality.
Horse Riding show is also a typical October 1 event in the northern parts of Nigeria.
Some fireworks go off in the capital and presidential palace at night. Sirens and gunshots from different the military indicate the opening of the day.
