How Efficient is Dexamethasone in the Treatment of COVID-19?

Is Dexamethasone Efficient

The efficiency of a steroid drug, dexamethasone in the treatment of critical COVID-19 is been advertised by United Kingdom researchers . A Recovery Trial by the team of researchers reveals it be the first drug to cut down COVID-19 mortality. Their results and conclusions are based on high-quality clinical trials but how efficient is Dexamethasone in the Treatment of COVID-19?

Is Dexamethasone Efficient in COVID-19 Treatment

Their findings show that dexamethasone works well with the most critical Covid-19 patients, who need ventilation or oxygen. More so, a significantly high statistic of survivors from a low-dose regimen of dexamethasone administered for 10 days.

It was found that one-third of the patients in the hospital who require ventilator survived after taking dexamethasone. For patients who require oxygen, there was about a one-fifth survival rate.

Dexamethasone isn’t viable in the covid patients who were not on ventilators or using oxygen. The investigators of the Recovery Trial, Martin Landray and Peter Horby warn that people treating COVID-19 at home should avoid taking dexamethasone backed by the findings. They are yet to study patients outside the hospital.

Though controversial, reports in the past show it is beneficial in the treatment of viral respiratory infections. Also, dexamethasone is easily available and affordable, parts of the reason the team chose it for the Recovery Trial.

As they compile the findings and prepare to publish it, they also continue to try other treatment methods.

The UK has now standardized it as a treatment for COVID-19 patients who require oxygen or ventilation. But physicians globally are also beckoning on the Recovery Trial team to release its data on dexamethasone for the potential treatment of COVID-19.

Aside from treating COVID-19 patients, dexamethasone also serves as a treatment for a number of illnesses like arthritis, cancer, allergies and asthma.
