President Buhari’s have ordered the use of face masks in public places around Nigeria. It is important to see this the way it really is and try to understand the use of face masks. The main goal is to stop the spread of the virus but not in the ways that many people think.
The use of face masks is not effective for people who are trying not to contract COVID-19, it is more effective the other way round.
According to reports, many people around the world have contracted COVID-19 without knowing because they are asymptomatic.
Such people can spread it faster than those who are sick from COVID-19 when they mix up in the public. A face mask over the nose and mouth of an asymptomatic person will stop them from getting it out. By wearing a face mask, they are not able to spread to virus coming from them.
However, a person who isn’t having coronavirus, with or without a mask, will likely get it just by close contact with an asymptomatic person.
When a person who isn’t having the virus wears a mask, it doesn’t guarantee safety from the virus. Coronaviruses can get past the most common face masks including those made with cloth fabrics in Nigeria. More so, the masks can cause some risks as it will normally collect dirt from the environment.
The best chance of preventing coronavirus spread both ways is by the use of N95 masks that are usually properly fitted by medical experts.
Wearing a face mask should also be a signal that a person who is not necessary bedridden from COVID-19 has the virus and is trying not to infect others.
