Coronavirus Growth Rate in Nigeria

Coronavirus

Nigeria’s coronavirus index case was confirmed on 26 February. There were measures to contain immediately it before the second case was discovered on 17 March. The next weeks, a reasonable daily growth level of one to five were seen until 21 March. The rate began to multiply and the number of infected cases jumped from 12 -22.

Though it is a bit back and forth, it doesn’t seem too disturbing yet. Lockdown in major cities including Lagos and FCT has now taken effect and Nigeria is in the supposed peak period. This is the point where many countries experienced over 100% growth rate. Cases in the United States and Italy at this period were in thousands and almost multiplied by two daily.

How much is coronavirus growing in Nigeria?

So far, it is different from what is seen in Nigeria. The growth rate in Nigeria continues to fall from 100% which is the highest that the country has seen to 15% one month after the index case.

Starting 30 March, all movements in Lagos and the FCT were seized by orders from the federal government for a 14 day trial period.

Football events are suspended for the next four weeks. All state borders are closed and the government also put restrictions on all kinds of local travels. Weddings and religious events all on hold as the government are making effort to cut down the spread.

The statistics provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on 31 March show that there are now 139 confirmed cases. With 20 people the day before and four new on the day of the last NCDC report the growth rate is at 15%. We can not determine if this rate will remain due to the lack of testing in the country. However, we will like to emphasise that the lockdown is effective in curbing the spread of coronavirus.

There are also a few suspicions about unknown cases. However, this report is to provide an up to date information on how much coronavirus is growing in the country. Eight cases are now fully recovered and discharged and only two deaths are recorded in Nigeria.
