Coronavirus Cases in Africa

The number of coronavirus cases in Africa has now exceeded 10,000. The World Health Organisation has been concerned about the spread of the virus on the continent Africa.

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO’s regional director for Africa cites socio-economic impacts of coronavirus as the most terrifying issue.

Coronavirus took some time to get to Africa, and WHO data now reveals that over 517 people have died on the continent.

Most cases in Africa originated from travellers and so far, the capital cities of African countries are most hit. The virus is slowly crawling into the most isolated regions and this will require a decentralized response WHO states.

Egypt which was the first country to record a case is also hit hard and has over 1,320 cases and 85 deaths.

Algeria has recorded at least 1,460 cases with at least 200 deaths. But the number, 1,740 in South Africa tops the rest of 52 countries with reported coronavirus cases.

With backup from WHO, countries in Africa including Nigeria are beginning to add more laboratories as testing sites.

Coronavirus cases are around 1.44 million globally cases with at least 83,000 people have died.
