Lectures who are members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU are getting their delayed February and March salaries following President Muhammadu Buhari approval for payment.
The lecturers are getting their payment immediately as a statement by Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment implied. The minister also ordered the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, and the Accountant-General of the Federation to get the salaries across urgently.
ASUU members have had their salaries withheld for failing to register on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information, IPPIS, platform. However, the coronavirus lockdown makes everyone including the lecturers vulnerable and that has to be mitigated in every way possible.
The Bank Verification Number, BVN of affected lectures will first get a revalidation from their vice-chancellors. They can proceed to receive payment from the Accountant-General of the Federation after that.
The last ASUU, FG meeting which followed the strike ended with a new proposal but kept the strike going as the 2009 agreement remained unimplemented. Schools have remained closed ever since and it is also part of the government measures to contain COVID-19.
ASUU members still refuse to honour the IPPIS as they feel pressured. The Federal Government has maintained that the IPPIS aims at fighting the ghost workers concept and as well as corruption.
