National Grid Collapse in Nigeria is a Major Crisis

The connection between electricity and water has never disappeared.

Water treatment plants require electricity to purify and distribute drinking water. Boreholes depend on electric pumps. Hospitals need uninterrupted power to maintain safe water systems. Industries rely on both stable electricity and reliable water supplies to operate efficiently.

When power fails, water supply often suffers shortly afterwards.

This interdependence explains why earlier planners attempted to solve both challenges simultaneously, even if the technology available at the time could not deliver the scale required.

Today’s FG reforms pursue the same ultimate objective through different means including creating infrastructure capable of supporting economic growth and improving living standards.

From Temporary Fixes to Long-Term Planning

The forgotten proposal by Israeli engineers for a dual-prupose plant (water & power) in the 1950s captures an era of technological optimism when engineers searched for creative shortcuts to accelerate development.

The most unrealistic part of the proposal is the idea of deploying this makeshift technology to supply electricity to every part of the region. Regional electrification requires a stable, interconnected grid system with power plants of appropriate scale. Trying to achieve this with thousands of small, cobbled-together, temporary dual-purpose plants would have been an operational, maintenance, and logistical nightmare. It would have been far more practical to build a single, efficient power station and a separate, efficient water pumping station.

Modern engineering has shown that while combined systems can work in specialised settings, nationwide development depends on robust, purpose-built infrastructure rather than temporary hybrid solutions.

Nigeria’s latest electricity reforms therefore represent not simply another policy announcement but the continuation of a decades-long national effort to fulfil aspirations first articulated before independence.

Whether today’s roadmap succeeds where earlier visions fell short will depend not only on generation capacity but also on transmission, distribution, maintenance, investment and consistent implementation.

The ambition remains remarkably unchanged: to ensure that reliable electricity, and the essential services it supports, including clean water, becomes a foundation for national development rather than an obstacle to it.
