Group Calls for Stronger Laws, Education and Social Protection on International Day of the Girl Child

Girl Child Marriage in Nigeria

Girl Child Marriage in Nigeria

As part of its recommendations, ActionAid Nigeria is urging the federal and state governments, lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies in Nigeria to strengthen the enforcement of laws protecting girls from child marriage and other harmful practices.

It also called for increased investment in safe, inclusive and quality education, particularly for girls in rural, conflict-affected and marginalised communities. The organisation further advocated expanded social protection and livelihood support for vulnerable households to reduce the financial pressures that can push girls into early marriage or force them to abandon school.

Parents, traditional and religious leaders, schools, community institutions and the media were also urged to challenge harmful social norms and create environments where girls could exercise their rights and participate in decisions affecting their lives. The SWEDD+ initiative similarly emphasises the need to improve access to justice and ensure that protections against gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, trafficking and child marriage are effectively implemented.

Investing in Girls Is Investing in Nigeria’s Future

The 2026 International Day of the Girl Child places renewed attention on the need to protect girls from harmful practices while expanding their access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities and leadership. For Nigeria, addressing child marriage will require coordinated action from government institutions, communities, families and civil society organisations.

While the First Lady’s message highlights the responsibility to protect girls’ dignity and future, ActionAid’s recommendations and the SWEDD+ programme underscore the importance of practical interventions, including access to education, economic support and effective legal protection.

Ultimately, ending child marriage will depend not only on commitments and awareness campaigns but also on ensuring that girls can remain in school, access support when their rights are threatened and make decisions about their own futures.

As the world marks the day under the theme “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” the central message is clear, protecting girls from early marriage and investing in their development are essential to expanding their opportunities and strengthening the future of Nigerian communities.
