When Are Schools in Nigeria Going To Reopen? -Major Health Concerns

Schools Reopen in Nigeria

Nigeria is reopening gradually after about six months of locking down major activities. Schools, businesses, churches and transport systems are resuming under government orders. Dr Sani Aliyu, National Coordinator of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 in Nigeria made an announcement over the weekend saying that schools should make plans to fully reopen across the country.

School admins were instructed to reopen when NYSC orientation camps reopen. Many had moved their classes online after the government ordered a lockdown due to COVID-19. New cases of COVID-19 are now declining and there is a better understanding of the virus making further lockdowns unnecessary.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos state government has said that higher institutions in Lagos will reopen on Sept. 14 and on Sept. 21 and primary and secondary will follow.

Since curfew time relaxed and travel restrictions lifted was relaxed nationwide, students can also travel back to school from anywhere they live. Land and air travel, as well as local and international transport systems, are fully resuming too.

Strict measures to reopen schools in Nigeria and major concerns

With all the data from COVID-19 put together, it seems like a better decision to reopen and follow strict safety rules. Chronic respiratory illness, obesity, diabetes or cancer and other health conditions put people at a higher risk of developing diseases or even dying both for adults and children.

This is raising a new concern for public school admins and parents considering the condition of learning in these schools. Many schools are struggling to make necessary provisions which could make the government guidelines easy to follow. Proper temperature screening at school entrances, use of facemasks, handwashing with soap and water are some the measures which the NCDC put in place.
