Rwanda is recognising the need for environmentally friendly transport systems in Africa, and gradually moving towards electric cars and motorcycles. The country opened its doors in 2019 to Volkswagen to test its electric cars which they call the e-golf.
The e-golf cars are fully electric and VW is partnering with Siemens whose role is to set up charging stations to set up the system in Kigali.
The company who seems ambitious to phase out the use of combustion engines is reforming its combustion-engine cars into electric.
Electric car charging is almost impossible in African countries that have electricity challenges. This makes Rwanda more reliable for electric car projects. Charging stations can charge the battery of an electric car up to 80 per cent within an hour according to reports on e-golf cars.
When fully charged and in perfect conditions, an electric car can cover up to 230 Kilometres.
Electric cars aren’t the cheapest cars to buy, but electric motorcycles are more encouraging. So far Rwanda is also has an electric motorcycle transport system. Being the first, Rwanda country hopes that more countries in Africa will join them soon in electric transport systems.
