The National Identification registration, managed by the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC is improving according to news from the commission.

Aliya Aziz, Director-General, NIMC, said in a statement that the improvement is aligned with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy declaration.

Both Nigerians and statutory residents get their identification numbers from the NIMC. Before now, the commission had only registered and issued about 500,000 National Identification Numbers monthly but says it will increase to 2.5 million.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, on an official visit to NIMC head office in Abuja, sat with Aliya Aziz who gave him assurance on this.

Aziz also said that the commission is competent and committed to providing identity services to Nigeria given manpower. However, the commission is leaning towards government support, as it expects to more resources for its objectives.

Pantami acknowledged the NIMC for its perseverance and pace notwithstanding scarce resources for the National Identification. He further assured the NIMC that it will get support from the government to meet its mandate.

In order to facilitate and sustain performance, the minister is also proposing to upgrade the status of the current infrastructure and equipment for the NIMC. More so, he has set up orders that will help improve that welfare of the NIMC management.
