The AEDC begins installation of the 900,000 free meters in Abuja

Residents of the FCT (Abuja) are now being supplied with free meters by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

From now until December 2021, at least 101,000 free meters will go out to customers AEDC Managing Director, Engr. Ernest Mupwaya said.

The first batch will absorb N6bn and the disco said it will deliver the rest of the free meters a few months after. This time to beneficiaries in Niger, Kogi and Nassarawa states.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria who has 40% shareholding, have sourced sufficient funding to support discos through a low-interest shareholder loan that will make it possible for DISCOs to receive sufficient meters to close the metering gap for good Mupwaya said.”

The FG has also provided enough fund for the process as Mupwaya noted. A total of 900,000 meters costing N23 billion will be given to the AEDC and according to Mupwaya, it is sufficient to meter customers as well as replace dysfunctional meters.

Connection points on the terminals that are without meters will get free meters. The NERC will regulate and punish anyone caught tampering the connection since the government considers the program a huge addition to the economy.
