Since the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Nigeria on February 29, lots of people must have had flu-like symptoms and suspected that it is the virus. In the face of the pandemic, this is normal as it is also not easy to get a COVID-19 test even though the WHO is pushing for more tests.
So far, the NCDC records that only about 7153 have been tested throughout Nigeria. Most results of suspected cases come back negative and most confirmed cases were discovered after they started showing symptoms.
How does COVID-19 test work in Nigeria?
The diagnostic test for COVID-19 in Nigeria is carried out in laboratories that have molecular diagnostic equipment. The lab collects a swab of the nose or throat and looks for the genetic materials of the virus.
Eight states in Nigeria have these laboratories where COVID-19 test take place, but it is not open to everyone. The test is mostly accessible to only people who show COVID-19 symptoms. Anyone who begins to show symptom is to notify the state through the hotlines and they will be picked up.
Living with a family member or friend who has COVID-19 does not entitle you to a test. The NCDC advises that such people should go into self-isolation as soon as the friend or a family member begins to show symptom.
At least 1500 tests are conducted daily in Lagos testing centres and in the rest of the laboratories in Nigeria. Plans to upscale the diagnostic testing throughout Nigeria are in place.
About 22 have died of COVID-19 in Nigeria including Abba Kyari the presidents Chief of Staff who tested positve abot one minth to his death.
