Egbin Power PLC is moving towards clean energy to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment in Nigeria with electric vehicles and bicycles which it launched on Tuesday.

In alignment with the federal government’s alternative energy motives, Egbin said it will promote the use of electric vehicles in Nigeria. This is also a part of the government’s agenda – the use of LPG and Compressed Natural Gas in vehicles, alternative energy options.

According to Chairman, Board of Directors, Egbin Power Plc, Mr Temitope Shonubi, the staff members will use the vehicles, 20 busses and 500 bicycles within the Egbin Power premises. It represents the company’s contribution to clean energy, environmental sustainability, productivity and healthy living, safety.

With this transport system in place, it says it is preventing the emission of 3.78 metric tonnes per day of carbon dioxide from close to 150 cars in Egbin and 1379.7 metric tonnes yearly.

Shonubi also said that “Electric cars will also certainly be deployed”. However, people will probably question the electricity supply in the country, and how they will recharge electric cars he noted. He relayed that he would give them assurance from the minister’s remark, but more so, Egbin will play its roles.

“Once the TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria) can evacuate the power we are generating; it simply means that there will be more power out there.”

Egbin Power is a sub-Saharan power group member and operates in the region. Its facility is state of the art and as Nigeria’s biggest power plant has space for six steam turbine.

Shonubi also said that the capacity of the Egbin turbines can evacuate at least 860 megawatts of power. So far, its current evacuation is about 500MW. Egbin is committing itself to an environmentally friendly future for everyone he said.
