ASUU Strike – Renegotiation Process Could Begin Soon

ASUU Strike

ASUU Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) recently declared a two-week warning strike in resistance to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). With an aim to pressure the federal government to approve the University Transparency and Accountability System (UTAS) instead.

With a few schools are yet to join in on the strike, students around Nigeria are hoping for renegotiation soon. The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu and Labour and Employment Minister Dr Chris Ngige are currently meeting to work out something. A renegotiation could happen soon, but there is no hope as to how it will turn out.

ASUU also uses the strike as a platform to argue issues of inadequate funding in public universities. More so, the lack of implementation of the 2009 agreement between the government and lecturers.

Journalists present after the meeting National Executive Committee (NEC), in Enugu Monday were briefed by the President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi. He noted that renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement was among the issues in motion during the meeting. The government, however, continues to hold the February salaries for ASUU members who will not enrol on IPPIS.
