Nigerians who are applying or intend to apply to study at any university in Northern Cyprus have been warned by the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) Abike Dabiri-Erewa to stop. The reason is clear – the United Nations (UN) does not recognise Northen Cyprus. A Nigerian student in Northern Cyprus now is taking a risk. According to Dabiri-Erewa, hundreds of Nigerian students die in Northern Cyprus without investigations.
Following the recent death of one more Nigerian student Ibrahim Khaleel, the federal government is now fronting the issue. “No Nigerian parent should send their children to any university in Northern Cyprus – there is a collaboration which we do not understand what makes them kill blacks, particularly our Nigerian students, Dabiri-Erewa said.”

Khaleel was a third-year engineering student and isn’t the first of Nigerian students to be killed off in Northern Cyprus. NiDCOM has filed a case with the International Police (INTERPOL) through the office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

It is important to note henceforth that if the government blacklists Northen Cyprus and any certificates got from its universities, it will be unwise to apply to study there.
The NiDCOM has now written to the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to stop Nigerians from studying in any universities in Northern Cyprus. Dabiri-Erewa is promising justice to the family of Khaleel and 15 others which she said died in Northern Cyprus.
Being only recognised by Turkey, investigating the deaths is difficult according to Dabiri-Erewa. She also pointed out a possible scheme to kill black students. This is why studying in a private university in Nigeria sounds better than walking into danger in Northern Cyprus.
