Biometrics is making a new appearance and taking a new role in the banking system. Fingerprint ATM cash withdrawal is now adopted by most banks in Nigeria to alternate the traditional card operation.
The ATM machines didn’t originally have fingerprint ports making the cards and pin the only relevant identity for withdrawal.
With fingerprint biometrics, cash withdrawal from the ATMs around Nigeria would scan the index finger or the thumb of customers just like is done when opening a new account.

The ATM machine processes the withdrawal the same way even with the introduction of fingerprint biometrics.
How fingerprint biometrics identification works
The traditional way of making an ATM cash withdrawal is to insert a card and introduce a pin. However, without the card, these are the steps to withdraw cash from an ATM using a fingerprint:
- First, choose the fingerprint option on any ATM
- Input account number or phone number
- Place finger on the scanner for verification
- The ATM takes about a second to recognise the prints and make a map
- Choose the amount for withdrawal
- Press enter and the transaction is complete
Note: The procedure could differ in each bank in Nigeria.
