Senegalese-American singer, Akon has officially launched the beginning of the development of the futuristic African city in Senegal. On Monday, the singer spoke to the press about the $6 billion projects and visited the construction site at Mbodiene which is over 100 kilometres away from Dakar with government officials. He said construction will begin on Akon City which is expected to have many districts. The first phase could take three years.

Akon pointed out that the main reason for the city is tourism and the projects aims to create more jobs in Senegal.

Akon further describes the city as “more than futuristic”. It will bring technology into Africa and “give the younger generation the opportunity to express all the knowledge that they’ve accomplished themselves on a futuristic level when it comes to digital merchandising”.

Aside from the lifestyle focus of Akon City which features hotels, resorts and theme parks, Akon City has planned more districts within.

Akon City Districts

A school district

Akon promises to team up with multiple universities in the US to bring ammunition for education in the city. More so, Mbodiene locals will get these educations for free.

Tech district

The singer is also teaming up with universities in the US to create tech hubs. He said he is communicating with tech hubs in Silicon Valley to base in the city and provide tech services.

Business district

Fortune 500 companies that want a footing can establish their main hub for business in Africa in Akon City. Business universities from the US will train students to be able to work for those fortune 500 companies.

Medical district

The school district will have a subdivision for medicine as well as research program which will allow for research in Senegal. Universities that are mainly grown in the medical field from the US will provide education for nursing, doctorship and medical licences. The medical district will also be completed with a full 10, 000-bed hospital which will provide hospital lease to all of Senegal

Entertainment district

A stadium for sports, concerts and main events will also be in the city. Akon is partnering with universities such as Berkeley to create opportunities for musical entertainment.

Akon City will operate its own cryptocurrency Akoin. However, it is not clear if that will be the only currency in use in the city.
